Accademia Barocca Santa Cecilia

The Accademia Barocca di Santa Cecilia Orchestra was established in 2005 as a result of a project created by Bruno Cagli, president of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and by Maestro Paolo Pollastri.

The Accademia Barocca represents a development of a musical ensemble, consisting of oboes and string instruments, that has a long tradition of performing the baroque repertoire.

The Accademia Barocca seeks to rediscover the repertoire of the "Vertuosa Compagnia dè Musici di Roma" Orchestra, established at the beginning of the XV century and to which important musicians of the time, such as Alessandro Stradella and Alessandro Scarlatti, have dedicated their compositions.

The Accademia Barocca has taken part in several activities and festivals, such as the Festival Barocco of Viterbo, of Noto, of Tagliacozzo, and the White Nights of Rome. On the 16th December 2007, the Accademia performed the "Concerto di Natale" that took place at the Senate, in the presence of the President of the Italian Republic.

Maestro Paolo Pollastri, first solo oboe of the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, has also been directing the Accademia Barocca di Santa Cecilia since 1990. Born in Bologna in 1960, Paolo Pollastri graduated in 1977 under the direction of Sidney Gallesi. He then completed his specialization at the Accademia Chigiana with Lothar Faber and at the Conservatory of Brussels with Paul Dombrecht. Paolo Pollastri has won a large number of national and international competitions, and has been the first oboe of numerous orchestras and performs as a soloist for a large number of orchestral groups: the Solisti Veneti, the Accademia Bizantina, the Virtuosi Italiani, the Symphonia Perusina, the Filarmonici di Verona. He favors the Baroque oboe, an instrument he has played under the direction of Frans Brüggen, Alan Stanley Curtis, Thomas Haselblock, Enrico Gatti, and Fabio Biondi. He has also played as a soloist with Christopher Hogwood, Roger Norrington, Simon Preston, Nigel Rogers, Robert Kohnen, Joshua Rifkin, Sergio Bartolo, Kenneth Gilbert, and Rinaldo Alessandrini. He has recorded for Erato, Emi France, Denon, Tactus, Fonè, Materiali Sonori, Musica Immagine, Eurospa Musica, Arts, and Harmoni Mundi. His presence can be found in a large number of recordings of the monographic series 'From the Baroque to the Present' by P&P Classica. His recording of the concertos for oboe and violin by Vivaldi in 1997 earned him a nomination for a Grammy award, as did his recording in 2000 of the 'Concerto Grossi' of Corelli with the Ensemble Modo Antiquo.

Paolo Piomboni took his diploma from the Conservatorio L. Cherubini of Florence with the highest marks possible under the direction of C. Rossi. Right after he began collaborating with the Accademia di Santa Cecilia, of which he became part in 1990 as first row violin. Meanwhile, he completed his studies in baroque philology. He also worked with players such as T. Koopman, F. Bruggen, A. De Marchi, I. Bolton, F. Biondi, P. Pollastri. He is first solo violin of the Accademia Barocca since its creation.
